The Senate Majority Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume, on Tuesday, decried the poor remuneration for security agencies, saying that recruits are paid less than N50,000 a month.

Ndume, a former Chairman of Senate Committee on  Army, asked the Federal Government to urgently review the stipends and salaries of serving military personnel.

He also said Nigeria does not have enough security agencies and personnel to handle the security challenges of the country.

“The recruits are paid less than N50,000 in some cases. How can you pay somebody money that cannot buy him a bag of rice and you expect him to go and sacrifice and put in his best?”

Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi Gov polls: Triumphant Diri, Ododo, Uzodimma unveil agenda

RE-ELCTED Governors Douye Diri of Bayelsa State; and Hope Uzodimma of Imo State; as well as Kogi State Governor-Elect, Alhaji Usman Ododo, yesterday, expressed joy over their victories in Saturday’s governorship polls in the three states and promised to turn the fortunes of the states around.null

While Diri promised to be governor for all Bayelsans irrespective of political affiliation, Ododo said he would work towards making Kogi the best state in Nigeria. On his part, Uzodimma said Imo people had spoken volumes through their massive votes for him and promised to fulfil his side of the bargain via delivery of democracy dividends.https://live.primis-amp.tech/content/video/amp/videoIframe.php?s=114290#amp=1

Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, won the hotly contested governorship election in the state by beating his main challenger, Chief Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress, APC, with 65,088 votes.

Diri polled 175,196 votes compared to Sylva’s 110,108 votes. Mr Udengs Eradiri of the Labour Party, LP, scored 905 votes to place a distant third.

The victory elicited jubilation in the state as Diri promised to remain governor for all Bayelsans, who he urged “to celebrate with temperance, as this victory is not the exclusive preserve of any one political party. Rather, it is the collective will of a people united towards progress and a better future.

Even those who cast their votes differently enriched our democratic practice by their participation and dissent. I reaffirm that I will continue to be the governor of all in Bayelsa State.”

Diri spoke as Kogi Governor-elect, Alhaji Usman Ododo, urged all Kogites to join forces with him to make Kogi the best state in Nigeria.

Indeed, some opposition parties that took part in the election congratulated Ododo on his victory and urged him.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Social Democratic Party, SDP, Candidate, Murtala Ajaka, who came second in the election, said he would not challenge Ododo’s victory in court becasue it is a waste of time.null

Also President Bola Tinubu commended Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Diri and Ododo on their victories, saying the outcome of the elections reflected the wishes of voters.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has called on the federal government to introduce a new revenue allocation formula that would give more money to states and local governments.

The forum said this in a communique issued after its meeting on Thursday in Abuja. The communique was read by the forum’s chairperson, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

Mr Mohammed said the opposition governors also reviewed the recent judgments of the Court of Appeal concerning governors of various states and noted the mixed outcomes.

“As a forum, we once again re-state our overall confidence in the judiciary to do justice.

“We believe that the Supreme Court will do justice in the cases where we recorded temporary setbacks like Zamfara and Plateau,” he said.

Mr Mohammed said that the meeting also reviewed the off-season elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo.

LP welcomes Atiku’s merger proposal, NNPP gives condition

Abdulrahman Zakariyau and El-ameen Ibrahim

Kindly share this story:

The Labour Party has described the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar’s merger proposal as a good proposal that should be considered.

But the New Nigeria People’s Party said it could only accept the proposal if Atiku would support a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

The major opposition parties were reacting to the call by Atiku, on Tuesday, that opposition parties should enter a merger to dislodge the APC from power.

The PUNCH reports that Atiku made the merger proposition while hosting the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria.https://live.primis-amp.tech/content/video/amp/videoIframe.php?s=113240#amp=1

How CBN weakened Naira – Sanusi

Former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, has revealed how the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) weakened the naira.

null

Sanusi stated that the CBN’s lending to the federal government under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, through ways and means, triggered inflationary pressure in Nigeria, resulting in the depreciation of the Naira’s value.

Speaking at MTN Capital Markets Day on Tuesday, Sanusi pointed out that the CBN had engaged in aggressive monetary tightening using various liquidity control instruments, including open market operations, Open Buy Back (OBB), and high T-bills rates.

null

He explained that these measures indicated the apex bank’s commitment to its core mandate of maintaining financial system stability and controlling inflation.

“I am optimistic, especially in the short term. We’ve had eight years of rapid expansion of the central bank’s balance sheet through ways and means.

“And that has fueled inflation and weakened the currency. And that is a fact,” he said.

Merging PDP with LP supporters is like Ferrari engine in peugeot – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani

A former Kaduna Central Senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has suggested that merging the People’s Democratic Party, PDP with the Labour Party, LP supporters is like fixing a Ferrari engine into a peugeot vehicle.

Sani stated this in a tweet via his X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.null

The former lawmaker stated, “Merging PDP with the young, agile, and restless Labor supporters will be like fixing a Ferrari engine into a peogeot.”

Recall that there were reports earlier speculating a potential merger of the PDP with the Labour Party.

But the Labour Party was quick to dispel the rumour, as it urged Nigerians to disregard the news that the party is working out a merger arrangement with any political party.

Mr Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary, Labour Party, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

The presidential candidate of the PPD, Atiku Abubakar, had earlier called on opposition parties to form a merger and save Nigeria from slipping into a one-party state.

According to Ifoh, it is purely a news item twisted and sensationalized by a section of the media to embarrass the party.

His words: “In my reaction, I said that it was only a proposal that every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work and that what we have presently is an autocracy.null

“There was nowhere in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned,” he said.

Ifoh said that LP had just concluded the 2023 general election episode and a post-mortem was yet to be held.

He said that the way forward for the party had not been discussed.

“When we do, Nigerians will be properly informed,” he said.
